A general accounting study estimated that the DoD could have saved $2 billion in inventory through having better information about their inventory by etching a Data Matrix Symbol permanently on each part. Each UID symbol can use UCC.EAN, ANSI MH 10.8.2 or ATA style descriptors. With a Data Matrix Symbol laser etching machine engraving a UID onto each part, you will be able to uniquely identify items such manufacturer, part number and serial number. Vendors supplying parts to the Department of Defense are required to supply parts with UID Data Matrix Symbols conforming to MIL-STD 130M. Marking with 2D Matrix Bar Codes also add a level of security as they may be encrypted so only your software will be able to scan the item.
