What is a UID string and how does it work?

A UID should not exceed 78 characters in width and is a non-parsable field. Any spaces or special characters in data elements will be deleted. The only special characters permitted are "-" (dash) or "/" (forward slash.) UID characters should consist of letters A-Z and numbers 0-9. "-" and "/" characters are not permitted as the first or last characters of the string.

The serial number of a string cannot exceed 30 characters. The original part number of a string cannot exceed 32 characters. The enterprise identifier string cannot exceed 13 characters.


What does a UID string look like?

RS = Record Separator
GS = Group Separator
EOT = End of transmission

The above sentence is translated into a 2D machine readable matrix code that looks similar to the yellow square in the picture above.
